Family and civil mediators are not formally regulated by any single body. Most of the best mediators however are accredited by one of the organizations that have established standards of accreditation.
Most accreditation standards require mediators in training to have a certain number of hours of observation, co-mediation and sole mediation experience, as well as certain numbers of cases mediated to completion.
Riverdale Mediation offers opportunities for internships leading to accreditation, if the intern is able to achieve the necessary standard. At any given time we have several interns with different professional backgrounds, and we aim to assign an intern to each case. Interns will have the opportunity to gain experience in all aspects of a successful mediation and ADR practice. Where feasible, interns will have the opportunity to work with all Riverdale associates as well as participate in internship exchanges with some of our teaching colleagues.
Not all internships result in accreditation. We cannot guarantee that the intern will obtain the number of hours or cases required for accreditation. The success of the internship will depend upon the principal’s assessment of the intern’s skills. Interns may participate in a full internship without achieving the qualifications for accreditation.
We require our interns to have, at a minimum, basic and advanced family mediation training and also training in screening for power imbalances and domestic violence. Substitute training will not be accepted. All interns as well must have mediation and arbitration liability insurance.
Mediation interns pay a fixed fee for the time that the principals devote to their learning. When the intern is deemed ready to mediate cases on his or her own, the principal shares the fees with the intern. We reserve the right to decline and terminate internships.
