Family Mediation Canada

The FMC is a leading body in mediation on an international basis. The FMC offers members the opportunity to attain a national FMC mediator certification. The training process to attain this certificate is very rigorous involving a thorough assessment of the applicant’s mediation skills. The designation by the FMC offers mediators the ability to work in the courts.

The FMC offers three designations:

  • Family Relations Mediator, FMC Cert. FRM
  • Family Financial Mediator, FMC Cert. FFM
  • Comprehensive Family Mediator, FMC Cert. CFM

The requirements for Family Mediation Canada accreditation for a Certified Family Relations Mediator are:

  • A minimum of 80 hours of basic conflict resolution and mediation theory education and skills training. There must be time allotted for intercultural training, and a minimum of 100 hours of training including:
    • 14 hours minimum relating to family and child law
    • 21 hours minimum including instruction on power imbalances and the dynamics of the effects of family abuse on family members
    • 7 hours minimum financial issues relating to separation, divorce and family reorganization training
    • 7 hours minimum training on ethical issues relating to the mediation process
    • And at least 7 hours on drafting memoranda of understanding

The requirements for Family Mediation Canada accreditation for a Certified Family Financial Mediator are:

  • A minimum of 80 hours of basic conflict resolution and mediation theory education and skills training. There must be time allotted for intercultural training, and a minimum of 100 hours of training including:
    • 14 hours minimum of training on family dynamics of separation and divorce
    • 7 hours of training or more on child support law
    • At least 21 hours on instruction on power imbalances and the dynamics and effects of family abuse on family members
    • A minimum of 42 hours of legal and financial issues related to separation, divorce and family reorganization
    • 7 hours or more on ethical issues related to the mediation process and;
    • At least 7 hours on drafting memoranda understanding

The requirements for Family Mediation Canada accreditation for a Certified Comprehensive Family Mediator are:

  • A minimum of 80 hours of basic conflict resolution and mediation theory education and skills training.
  • 150 hours of further training to include the following;
    • 35 hours or more of training on the family dynamics of separation and divorce
    • 21 hours minimum on child law, custody, access, guardianship, support, child protection and abduction law
    • 21 hours minimum on instruction on power imbalances and the dynamics and effects of family abuse on family members
    • At least 42 hours of training on legal and financial issues relating to separation, divorce and family reorganization
    • 7 hours or more on ethical issues relating to the mediation process and;
    • A minimum of 7 hours on drafting memoranda understanding
  • All candidates of any of the above accreditations must submit proof of 30 hours of supervised practicum. If the candidate has already been practicing as a family mediator for at least 2 years they may submit two (2) positive peer evaluations from references that have mediation experience and knowledge of the candidate’s mediation practices.
  • All candidate must be members of the FMC and annually renew there membership as well as have insurance coverage of $1 million aggregate.
  • Candidates must also maintain a minimum number of hours of continuing education and skills training

What is the application process?

  • Applicants must ensure they meet all of the above requirements before they fill out the application form.
  • They must complete and submit a role play video
  • There will be a personal skills assessment of the video
  • The candidate will write a final examination and;
  • The FMC board of Directors will ratify the candidate.

The Costs:

  • Application fee: $10 by mail or downloaded from the website for free
  • Tuition fee: $400 – submitted with the application
  • Annual maintenance fee: $100
  • FMC membership renewal: $125/ year or $225/2yrs
