This three-day workshop is the first course in our Family Mediation Training series. It is designed to give a comprehensive theoretical basis for the skills training in the courses that follow (Basic Family Negotiation and Mediation and Advanced Family Mediation and Negotiation: Theory and Skills. The course features experienced mediators and academics in conflict theory and analysis; seminal readings about conflict, disputing and mediation; case studies; exercises; class discussion; take-home assignments; and extensive resource information. Registrants will learn about:

  • The nature, causes and “drivers” of conflict
  • What causes conflicts to escalate into disputes
  • Various dispute resolution processes
  • Basic negotiation theory
  • The skills and attitudes of good mediators
  • Sources of negotiation power that parties have or believe they have, and how this impacts mediation
  • Different approaches to mediation
  • An overview of mediation ethics, standards and roles

Course Cancellation Policy:

(1) A 15% admin fee (plus HST) will be charged on cancellations made more than 14 days before the start date of the training date; (2) For cancellation requests received less than 14 days before the start date of the training, we reserve the right to not issue a refund given the expenses incurred to accommodate the participant, such as overhead, training materials, food and instructor costs.

We reserve the right to change program content, speakers and locations without notice. We reserve the right to cancel any workshop and will provide a 100% refund in such circumstances.
