Ontario law requires family lawyers, family arbitrators and parenting coordinators to refresh their basic screening knowledge and skills every five years, unless they have completed ten arbitration hearings in that time. This two-day program meets the requirements of the Ministry of the Attorney General.

In addition to covering the “hardcore” screening/med/arb issues, what a great reminder of the multiple intelligences we must foster and draw on in order to meet best practices: (1) Emotional intelligence, most closely related to screening I suppose, to be alive or mindful to issues of DV, power imbalances etc.; (2)Cultural competencies, to address often-hidden or simply undiscovered tendencies or practices within certain cultural communities, with particular sensitivity when not both but one of the spouses is a member of such community; (3) Pets – not only in terms of the cycle of violent behaviour, but also to reinvigorate the debate over whether pets are property or (something more like) children.
