Riverdale Mediation at the AFCC 51st Annual Conference

AFCC program coverOn May 27th-31st, the Association of Family and Conciliation Courts will be holding their annual conference close to home: at the Westin Harbour Castle in Toronto. This year’s topic is “Navigating the Waters of Shared Parenting: Guidance from the Harbour.”

Here at Riverdale, Hilary Linton, Elizabeth Hyde, and Christine Kim are all excited to be presenters at the conference.

On Thursday, May 29th, Christine will be presenting alongside Dana Cohen, Hon. Robert Spence, and Andrea Himel in a workshop titled, “What About the Village? Extended Families and Step-families Following Separation.” Drawing on family systems theory, this session will explore how step-parents and extended family members may inflame conflict and/or assist in the resolution of disputes.

Also on Thursday, Hilary will be speaking on “Procedural Triage for Lawyers, Arbitrators, Dispute Resolution Officers, PCs and Judges” along with Dr. Stephen Sulmeyer of California. Drawing on case studies, research findings, discussion and exercises, this session will equip professionals with skills and strategies for effectively screening clients for family violence and power imbalances.

Then, on Friday, May 30th, Elizabeth will be speaking on “Divorce Proofing the Family and Closely Held Business” with Edward Winer, Stacie Glazman, and Deborah Moskovitch. This session will focus on steps that can be taken to safeguard family businesses during divorce.

Conference registration is currently open on the AFCC website if you’d like to join us in these important conversations. Also, watch for the mediate393 booth at the exhibition, where we’ll be promoting the subsidized mediation services provided through our sister company.
